With a little incentive from a South African colleague, and an overall preference for New World wines, my first ever wine-tasting lesson was on South African wines.
Wine in South Africa dates back to the late 1600. However till today, most and the best wines are produced only for local consumption.
The class focused on 5 South African wines, which we tried and tested. For novices like me, information was also shared on the Pinotage, a local specialty and a cross between the Pinot Noir and Cinsault
Then came decision time: which wines do we like best? Known for its white wines, I rather preferred the local South African reds, a Blaauklippen Shiraz 2003 and a Southern Right Pinotage 2002.
