My last contribution to Wine Blogging Wednesday was no. 25, on Champagne. How appropiate then to be part of this event again with sparklers?A little background to the WBW events: started by Lenn from Lenndevours, the event has now taken off in the wine community. For those who speak the language, a Dutch version is available as well.
When I can, I send in my little Belgian contribution too. The current edition of WBW on sparklers is hosted by Culinary Food. Who I can only assume will be dizzy from all the entries, given the pre-Christmas timing of this WBW 28.Unfortunately I am suffering from a very continental cold (read a lot of rain – a lot of pain!), so I won’t be able to spend that much time raving about non- Champagne sparklers. Our last discovery was a Romanian (!) bubbly.
A while ago we decided it would be fun and quite original (for Brussels at least) to host theme wine tastings. Thus all we ask our guests is to bring a bottle of wine from a region less known for us all to try. We provide the food, everyone is a winner. One such tasting was a Romanian wine tasting.
With Romania and Bulgaria joining the EU next year, you can imagine there is a lot of hype in Brussels about these two countries. Events left and right let you discover what they have to offer. Including wine.
Back though to the Romanian bubbly. Coming from the leading wine region of Romania, the Prahova Valley, we tried an extra brut ‘spumant’. It was a pleasant discovery. The bubbly was dry and with enough bubbles in the glass to give us that pleasant zing. We were quite impressed by it. Definitly a (cheaper) party sparkler and so much more unusual.
