Recently I was invited to a … gin tasting. Because summer is approaching (finally!), I thought baby life aside, I need inspiration for sunny G&Ts and so I went.
This tasting though was a bit of a gin tasting with a twist. Because the gin we tasted is locally made in Belgium! A country know and loved for its beer is now rapidly expanding into gin. The gin on offer was from the Lindemans Brewery, which is produced in cooperation with De Moor distillery. Lindemans is marketing two gins – a clear, Premium Gin, made out of 15 botanicals (don’t you just love this trade language? botanicals … makes it sound so old fashioned and mysterious!) and a red, Premium Red Gin, where cheery (kriek) juice is added to give it its gorgeous Chanel red colour (seriously!).
We tasted both gins and although I am a purist – and my Premium Gin G&T was de-li-cious! – I absolutely fell in love with the kriek infused gin. Loved it! Refreshing and still tasting of gin and yet different. During the tasting we had the opportunity to try out 2 different cocktails (and oh boy, did I). A classic G&T with a bit of rosemary (going back to pure G&T, the rosemary didn’t really do it for me) and a Rene Royal. Here is where the Lindemans Premium Red Gin truly came into its own. I could live all summer on Rene Royals 🙂
Ingredients – 3cl Lindemans Red Gin, 3cl fresh grapefruit juice, 1cl sugar syrup, sparking wine (ideally dry), lemon zest.
Mix the gin, the grapefruit juice and the sugar together with a bit of ice in shaker. Shake, shake, shake. Add the mix to the glass and mix with the sparking wine. Sprinkle the lemon zest on the cocktail. Serve.
Hot damn! I think it is G&T o’clock somewhere …
I would like to extend our thanks to Ogilvy for organising this tasting. Disclaimer: as always, all opinions written are our own.
