Gio’s Strada

eating #Italian at Gio Strada #foodtruck in #Brussels - by @onfoodandwineWhen it comes to stylish foodtrucks in Brussels … well it doesn’t get more stylish and sexy than the Italians from Gio’s Strada! If you have tried their foodtruck you know exactly what I mean.

I first discovered the Gio’s Strada boys on a little side street off the shopping area of Chaussee de Waterloo, behind The Hotel. Set aside in the sun, on this very quiet and green alley, we enjoyed some of the best mozzarella and tomato salad, washed down with the traditional Aperol Spritz. A proper girls lunch out.

Given we were the only customers at that particular hour (I was later to find out it was also Gio’s Strada first week …) we had the chance to chat a bit with the owner (and father of the 2 men serving) who was also busy behind the bar.

Giuseppe Daidone started Gio’s Strada to bring authentic flavours and a bit of Italian lifestyle to the streets of Brussels. Together with his 2 sons – David and Alexandre – they serve Italian food from the most perfectly cute vintage 3 wheeled Piaggio Ape. Seriously, it feels like you stepped into a 50s Italian movie. This image is probably helped further by the suspenders and white shirts the David and Alexandre wear which only adds to the charm.

The food stays true to the Italian roots of the father and sons footruck enterprise and besides antipasti, there are several pasta dishes, simple mozzarella with roquette, then a mixed mozzarella and tomatoes salad, with a bit of bacon and a touch of olive oil and balsamic vinegar (my favourite combination!) as well as specially created sandwiches, polpette. I am now sorry I didn’t try those as well as they looked delicious. Next time.

And of course we should not forget the drinks. Ah, Italy and its drinks. Because what would an al fresco lunch be without Aperol Spritz? Of course white and red Italian wines are also on offer as is prosecco. Those are for another time as this time around we stuck to the classics.

Now all I have to do is find out where they are going to next to get my Italian summer holiday dose in Brussels. And hope that the sun will eventually make itself shown in Brussels too. Hello sun, time to come out!
